rewatched the majhal episode of fma 03 and 'gender nonconformity is a sign of grief, get well soon' is not just a bad but also incredibly weird take, BUT I don't think it's quite as random and arbitrary as I used to.

I feel the story is kindve alluding to Something re gender by having both 'old man who ignores the actual aging woman in love with him in favour of obsessing over ideal youthful feminine beauty that's nothing more than a lifeless doll created through violence' and 'girl who fervently rejects femininity and hides herself as a tomboy'

However these two things don't actually meaningfully connect/juxtapose/or comment on each other at all, as best as I can tell, AND it's already stemming from a 'haha tomboys are funny. girls should be feminine' place so it ends up just weird and annoying as hell

A forger’s love really do be the worst episode in fma history. Nothing else can ruin a story more than having your pacifist protagonist kill someone in the 4th episode and then proceed to never bring it up ever again.

yeah!!! i love my wee fma christmas themed stories. i've written 84 christmas/winter themed fics over the last 4 years so i couldn't possibly pick a fave but these are the ones i'm a big fan of atm:

i've also done a few here and there (halloween, valentines day, and fma secret santa fics) that i love and were so much fun to work on!

if anyone ever makes fanart of my wee stories i would literally ascend to a higher plane of existence. one or two have done it in the past and i hold those pieces so very near and dear to my heart, and still look them up and just smile goofily at the fact someone made something based on something i created because like. what!!! wild!!! it makes me v happy :)

Other misc rewatch thoughts on fma ep 4

At the end of episode 2, Al says to Rose that he's going to tell her about his + Ed's past, but I wonder how much of these flashback episodes was literally what he told her. *Al voice* "Yeah Ed didn't seem scared to go out looking for zombies (?) at night so I tried to act brave too but was blatantly nervous"

I thought Claus was neat and could've made a good reoccurring character. The Ed + Claus dynamic was fun

That said everyone had better get normaller about Claus's gender stuff right this second

Fuck Majhal he got what was coming to him (though that's another one for Elric brother trauma bingo)

Love that Lust was technically in this episode but did nothing whatsoever bc saw Majhal's whole deal and immediately went "oh this guy's useless and not worth my time. Cringe" and just left

Also. The fact that Lust was immediately able to tell what was going on after seeing a Karin doll like once (ig she could've talked to it first but that didn't seem to be the case) was impressive

Generally Lust has so much alchemy knowledge despite not being able to preform it herself. I'm certain this is something she researched a lot independently given her whole wanting to be human thing but I forget how much detail canon goes into about it. This rewatch I'm going to be looking out more for any time she shows wisdom about alchemy

i just imagined an au of my next life as a villainess that had fullmetal alchemist's alchemy instead of magic. instead of having an element of magic, people have different specialties when they do alchemy. light magic users are instead people who figure out how to use alchemy to heal people. katarina has her previous life's memories because the claus family has someone use alchemy to heal her and the attempt gets just a bit too close to human alchemy which causes side effects

Interesting. Not sure how well that would work in regard to the explanation there, given the way that life and death seem to work in the FMA universe. The isekai part could honestly stay the same with no issue, since no one would question that part. Isekai is as isekai does, though you could probably sneak her through the Gate of Truth for the sake of the inevitable chaos that would ensue with Katarina Claes, of all people, having access to the secrets of Alchemy, even if only on a subconscious level.

Replacing the setting’s magic with Alchemy is an intriguing idea, though, and makes for an interesting setup regarding Maria, in particular.

Considering that, in the canon Sorcier, only nobles have magic, it would be very easy to have it that only the nobles learn Alchemy because they only pass it down to their descendants. As a result, most commoners would assume that the nobles were the only ones who can perform Alchemy, which would lead to the assumptions that the villagers had about her mother.

If we want to keep in line with the rarity of Light Magic and Maria’s status as an extremely powerful light magic user, she could have effectively developed her own version of Alkahestry, which is more geared towards healing and is something that would not only not be well known in Sorcier and thus add to her status as a rarity and as a prodigy, as well as receiving the disdain of several of the noble students for being, in their eyes, an upstart commoner.

Geord and Alan having Flame and Water Alchemy could be attributed to family lines fairly easily, with one learning from the King and the other from the Queen and/or their older brothers. Given that both are intelligent young men and the example Roy gave when fight Lust, it also means that either of them could easily cause quite the explosion...

Keith is a blood relation, so he could easily have been taught some Alchemy prior to his being sent to live with Katarina’s family, with his specialty being in altering earth and stone. Mary also specializes in water and could, in theory, at least, make an explosion, herself.

Sophia and Nicol are capable of using Alchemy, but they don’t really make use of it that often. Sirius, as portrayed by Raphael, knows the way to perform alchemy, but gets it wrong from time to time. Sirius, himself, on the other hand, is a horse of a different color.

Due to the attempt at human transmutation done to try to put Sirius’s soul into Raphael’s body, he wound up going through the Gate of Truth, himself, and has an impressive understanding of Alchemy and how to use it. He does have to rely on subtler means than black magic for his attempt to attack Katarina, since he can’t exactly manipulate the hearts and minds the way that Dark Magic can. I’m not entirely sure how the ending would play out regarding Maria’s disappearance and Katarina’s coma and dream, but it would definitely go down in a very different manner.
